ORIGINS OF THE BEAST AND FAQ’s
(SITE REDO IN PROGRESS) Greetings and welcome to the Main Lair of the Manwolf, also known as The Beast of Bray Road, Dog Man, Man Dog, or Werewolf. To the left is the artwork seen round the world, the original”kneeling roadkill” sketch I did for The Week, a now defunct newspaper based in Delavan, Wisconsin,Dec. 29 1991. At the time, I considered “The Beast of Bray Road” sort of a throwaway story for a slow news week. But the article  inspired many people to come forward and say they had seen the same thing, and not always recently. Some of the sightings were up to ten years earlier, with one possibly related event dating back to 1936.
Twenty years and hundreds of sightings later, four of my 14 published books are dedicated to sightings of this and similar upright canines reported nation-and-world-wide. But that first story showed that something big, hairy and wolfish roamed the country roads and woods of Walworth, Jefferson and Racine Counties. The first witnesses to come forward publicly saw the creature on or
near Bray Road, a few miles outside of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, so I dubbed it, “The Beast of Bray Road.”  The beast has followed me ever since. Similar sightings continue to present and I’ve been interviewed for scores of radio and TV shows including national shows like Monsterquest, Lost Tapes, Mystery Hunters, Michigan and Wisconsin Public  Radio, Coast to Coast AM and SyFy’s New In Search Of.
The sightings continue, as seen in this brief video of eyewitness Robert Welch near Fulton, WI, 2012.
I’m also happy to get  Bigfoot sightings, with over a dozen in Rock, Walworth and Jefferson Counties alone since 1963.
Whether the sightings are old or just occurred, and no matter  the type of creature, the more information we have, the better the chances that we can eventually put the pieces of the puzzle together. And for the record, I do not believe these are traditional werewolves!  As far as I’m concerned, their true nature is yet to be determined.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. Most frequently asked question, paws down, is…what is the Beast, really? Natural animal, or supernatural? Answer: I don’t know. We simply don’t have enough evidence to say yet. And there is a high probability that everyone is not always seeing the same thing. There could be a biological, physical animal seen by some while others see phantoms or supernatural entities from a variety of sources. A few may be misidentifications or hoaxes.
2. Second most frequently asked question is…have I (meaning me, Linda Godfrey) seen
the creature? Answer: Nope, although I would like to. I’ve hiked many Kettle Moraine Trails, camped out in sightings areas, and have driven many miles. But to my knowledge, no one with the exception of a handful of previous witnesses has been able to go out and actually see the creature on purpose. However, I saw the upright, gray-furred back of something 7 feet tall while on location with Monsterquest in 2006. This is detailed in The Michigan Dogman; Werewolves and Other Unknown Canines Across the USA.
3. What time of day is the Manwolf most frequently seen? Answer: Most sightings occur between 10:30 pm and 5 a.m. but a few have occurred either at twilight,, dawn or in daytime hours.
4. What time of year is the Manwolf most frequently seen? Answer: Sightings occur all year round, but peak in Wisconsin between August and October when high cornfields facilitate covert movement.
5. Where can I camp out on Bray Road to see the werewolf? Answer: Nowhere. The land on Bray Road is Â
privately owned and is under increasing development. People who see you on their land will call the sheriff and report you for trespassing. You must obtain permission from landowners to walk in the fields or woods. You’d be better off camping in one of the many Kettle Moraine State Forest campgrounds and hiking the more remote trails. BTW, stealing the Bray Road road sign is not cool, it’s criminal and disrespectful of the town.
6. Is the creature often seen near cemeteries? Answer: I do find more and more sightings are near cemeteries and old sacred burial and effigy mound sites — also crossroads, churches, and military areas. Water and some type of cover like brush or cornfields are the most consistent characteristics of sightings areas.
7. Is the Beast of Bray Road a Native American legend? Answer: Many tribes have legends about people turning into wolves or dogs, such as the Navaho Skinwalker or Cree Skinchanger. There is a mistaken notion that the creature might be a Windigo, but these mythic beasts are usually described as 20-tall skeletal creatures made partly of ice and related to starvation cannibalism. See my books for detailed discussions of relevant Native American beliefs.
8. How long have the sightings been going on? Answer: If you don’t count old loup-garou legends from places like Green Bay or Detroit, MI, the earliest reported incident happened in 1936 outside Jefferson, Wisconsin.
9. Does the creature hurt humans? Answer: contrary to a werewolf slasher video that uses my title, “The Beast of Bray Road,” I do not have a single report of any human being injured by a Manwolf beyond one man in Quebec who was scratched deeply on his hip and side, although many people have been thoroughly frightened by its aggressive actions and posture. It seems to be more of a scavenger and hunter of small game and deer. Its main aim when encountered is to get out of sight as quickly as possible.
10. Can you send me all your files/all your reports for XYZ state/take me werewolf hunting/answer all my questions about the Beast or werewolves? Answer: I deeply regret there is only one of me, while there are many such requesters. I’m sorry but it just is not possible for me to assist in any of these cases. Besides, my files are a mess!
11. How do I report a sighting?Email me, please at lindagodfrey99 at gmail.con (use @ instead of word “at”) Include
as much information as possible, including date (or closest estimate), time of day, weather, lighting conditions, location, terrain or environment of location, what you were doing when sighting occurred, type of vehicle if driving, direction in which you were traveling, whether you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, what the creature was doing when spotted, which direction it appeared from if moving, whether it was on two legs or four, approx. height and weight, color, fur description, head shape, ears, eyes, teeth or claws if visible, if tail was seen, shape of legs, any sounds or smells, any thoughts or emotions that occurred to you during the sighting, how you felt afterward, whether you observed creature leave the scene, any interactions between you and the creature, whether you returned to check for evidence such as footprints or hair, and whether you have seen other unusual things such as ghosts or UFOs. I always keep names confidential on request. If you can make a simple sketch, that’s great.

Hey Linda, I was wondering if you know whether there’s a pattern of reported PERSONALITY/BEHAVIOR traits of these canid beings common to certain regions that you’ve noticed from your reports of encounters?
For example, have you noticed any area of the world where the reports of encounters with these beings are more positive (or pawsitive, rather. hehheh) or neutral in terms of the beings’ demeanor toward them (i.e.No OUTWARD display of aggression of any kind)?
Alternately, have you noticed any pattern/correlation between this aggression-type behavior and the putrid smell of DECAYING FLESH I keep reading/hearing from your reports and elsewhere??
Would be interesting to know where one could potentially encounter the relatively nice ones, and if there’s a connection between that smell and a certain “breed” of these that despise humans!!
Hi Greg, I can’t say that I’ve ever noticed certain personality traits being more common in any one geographic area. They seem pretty consistent throughout. Also I’ve never had anyone report a smell of decaying flesh in connection with sightings of these creatures. I don’t think any of them want to be someone’s pet!
Actually, if my memory serves me correctly….
In terms of the smell: you did mention before about the “Gadara” one where the people smelled rotting flesh from the creature, right? That’s just one example. I do recall there were others but I’d need to look/listen back at all the interviews/reports to give details.
In terms of the personality: Some reports of yours were of them running away, some were running TOWARD the people aggressively (to simply run them off it seems). One I recall the best is the one from I think Mt Baldy where the dog-being just stood there looking at the human out of innocent curiosity, didn’t flinch when the person took out his gun, but got scared and ran off as soon as the guy started to take out his camera.
Like I said these are just two examples of the stuff I’ve collected from your websites and radio interviews.
These beings seem far too intelligent and independant to be anyone’s “pet”. But I am curious if it’s possible any of them could be befriended by a human.
That’s one of the reasons I ask.
I noticed in your blog about reporting sightings the mention of being under the influence. I would have to say that although smoking pot will shoot one’s credibility in the ass, wild animals have walked right up to me many times over the years while doing so. This has been true for both predator &prey. Many of the prey close enough to touch! Behind that, I would guess it would hold true if these creatures are as present entirely in this physical dimension. If they are transdimentional or supernatural, who knows? Consistent attraction to the smell would indicate the creatures exist in the physical realm to the same degree as us.
i to have had the same experiences,is it a strange quicendece or something else.
These Dogmen — haven’t been seen in CONNECTICUT, have they??? I would like to know they have not gotten to my state… I don’t want to run into one!!!
Not to my knowledge…yet!!!
Linda here’s a piece about a newly rediscovered Romano British art artefact circa 1st-3rd Century AD depicting Apollo Cunomaglos supposedly meaning Apollo the Hound ‘Prince’ but maglos is etymologically related to magus mage and magi and has a meaning closer to Saint or Holy power worker [though it's true in British vernacular "you're a prince" can mean something akin to "you're a saint"].
Roman artefact discovered in Sudeley Castle cupboard

Elsewhere especially in Greece Apollo was more associated with mice wolves and certain birds like ravens and swans so a suggestive deviation from the norm.
linda, please come to madison we would love to hear from you. i was a student at jfk prep and have many stories i would like to share with you
Would love to Bruce, maybe I can arrange something at a B&N!
that would be great, love your new book
Hey Linda, have you seen this? Just came across this youtube video of this preacher who apparently is a former high-level satanist and gives a FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT (apparently) on where exactly the werewolf demons, the ones with the RED EYES specifically, come from! Certainly something worth looking into I think (he starts talking about werewolves at around 1:21:45) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vZWxSqY2aY&feature=related
ALSO: did you catch my last response regarding contacting these artists for PRO-BONO illustration work?
I have not seen it but it’s interesting. And thank you for sending it.
Thanks also for the artist suggestions. I’m not sure what I will need for the new book yet but I’ll keep that in mind– if you know any of them that you think would especially like to do something for free in exchange for national print exposure you could ask them to e-mail me a JPEG as a sample. I’ve had other artist friends help me in the past and I do have a son who is a professional artist as well but if something looks like it would be appropriate. I might be able to consider it. Of course, my editors always have the last say!
Again I appreciate all your consideration and interest – – Linda
Have you ever heard of Eastern Shepherds? They are black dogs like German Shepherds except they have stronger hips and more manipulation with their paws. I have a rescue dog that many people I have met think is an Eastern Shepherd because he is blace & can manipulate things w/his front paws. Eastern Shepherds (Eastern Europe not NY) were bred to have stronger hips and be able to climb ladders for police & search & rescue work. I just read your last book “Real Wolfmen” also the “Big Bamboozle” which tells how black ops work & is scarier & I am wondering if some bases are or have been used to create dog men using Eastern Shepherds as the basis because they can stand on their hind legs and catch things w/their paws.
Interesting, Abby. I think it unlikely that human and canine DNA are compatible, but this sounds like a good candidate for a wolf-dog hybrid that fits witness descriptions of dogmen!
